A full-time Teacher of English is required.  The successful candidate will work under the direction of Assistant Headteacher (English) as part of a team dedicated to improving standards, achievement and the continued development of the English programme in the Academy. 


Experience Required

It will be essential for the successful candidate to hold Qualified Teacher Status and preferably an English based degree.  It would also be an advantage to have had experience teaching English to the full ability range to GCSE level. This post is suitable for experienced teachers and NQTs.

It will be vital to be able to relate positively to young people, enjoy their company and be able to communicate effectively (avoiding confrontation).  You will need to have a positive outlook, be resilient, have a capacity for hard work, and be committed to the Academy’s child centred ethos.

We are looking for an enthusiastic person who will fit into the team and enjoy the prospect of raising standards in learning and teaching whilst contributing to the continued success of the Academy.

A high level of confidence will be needed to engage children and to utilise active learning approaches to the teaching of English.


The Department

The English Team comprises 15 specialist English teachers and one primary-trained Literacy teacher.

The English Department is housed in an area of 8 centralised teaching rooms.  All rooms have interactive whiteboards and PCs.  Additional equipment is readily available, for example media resources, theatre and drama studio.  The Library is a spacious, book-lined room equipped with computers, and close to a suite of ICT rooms, all of which are accessible for use.  Being a PE and Sports College, wellness and fitness equipment is offered also for staff use.


The Curriculum

The curriculum is available online and comprises a programme of units grouped by areas of experience in English, for example pre and post 1914 fiction, drama, language, media, poetry so that there is continuity across key stages for students and a chance for staff with keen interests to become departmental specialists. 

Practice in the department in terms of curriculum mapping, use of data and team teaching are among our strengths.  At KS4 students study Edexcel GCSE English Language and Literature. Exam results continue to rise at 70% A*-C with a high proportion of B grades and above.

In the lower school there is an exciting Literacy project, centred on a phonics scheme which supports students with low levels of literacy.  The English team works closely with the Learning Support team, among whom are several trained literacy colleagues.


There is a large variety of extra-curricular activities such as Reading, Writing, Film clubs and trips, together with a highly successful Public Speaking group.  There are theatre visits to plays, to hear poets, library trips, visiting theatre companies and competitions galore which give students opportunities to have fun while extending the range of their experiences.
